My reason for the question is this.I was asked to wire up a new hot tub. When I checked job I found there was a tub in that location prior to this with existing 1" conduit stubbed up to a Disco or J-box.Couldn"t tell witch as box had been broken off.Unfortunatlly it comes up 1ft away from the tub.Conduit is under a concrete patio making it difficult to relocate to greater than 5ft I could cut back the stub up and LB into the tub, J-box and surface mount pipe to Disco greater than 5',or demo concrete and reroute the pipe underground, any suggestions? there is an existing 50 amp GGI breaker feeding #6 THHN in the pipe. Just a thought, but maybe the maintenence disconnect required by 680.12 (within sight and not closer than 5 feet), fills the need for the emergency disconnect. At any rate, you would still need a disconnect per 680.12.

YES, a disconnect IS required. An emergency switch is not.
680.12 & 680.41 are NOT the same thing.

Jim I think 680.12 "Within sight and readily accessible" would prohibit that.
