I usually just run 6/3 Nm to a hot tub disconect but disc will be run outside. I was thinking of using type SE cable from panel to disconect as part of the cable will be installed outside in pvc. Then switching over to THWN from disconect to tub. I have never done it this way before and from what I can tell it is legal? Any objections? Thanks

Sounds good. The NM would be allowed if the NM entered directly into the back of the disco. I should say that most authorities will allow this.

I would like to caution you as to the instruction on some of these tubs. I have found that many of the tubs are requiring the EGC to be the same size as the power conductors. This cannot be accomplished with NM but may be possible with the appropriate SE cable

See 680.42, then 680.21 (4) if the tub is located outdoors.

Be very carefull of the specs that come with it. Always best to re read all of 680 as it is easy to miss small details like gfi, disc location, required receptacle, deck ground potential , any item within 5 feet. Will the disconnect be mounted on the house ? In site ?

According to 680.42 you must use Part I and II. In 680.21(A)4 you may use a cable assembly with an uninsulated EGC if it is a branch circuit. If you were to put a fused disconnect with GFCI protection outdoors that would now be considered a feeder. You would then have to go to 680.25 which states that the EGC must be insulated.

680.21(A)1 would be used from the disconnect to your hot tub.

680.26(B)2(b) You also must bond the around the hot tube between 18-24in. from the inside wall with a #8awg 4-6in. below the subgrade.
