Hot tub wiring

Re: Hot tub wiring

I have a related question. 680.12 calls for a disconnect for maintenance purposes. 680.41 calls for an emergency disconnect within 5 feet of a spa or hot tub, but not for single family dwellings.
I know PartIV, Spas & Hot Tubs, has to comply with Part I, which 680.12 is the last entry.

My question, does a spa or hot tub need a disconnect installed in a single family dwelling.
Reason I ask is our inspectors stopped requiring local disconnects due to 680.41. Then they reverted back to requiring them.

Re: Hot tub wiring

I believe the disconnect is still required for dwelling units, it just doesn't have to be within 5 ft. as required for the emergency disconnect. It must be within sight and accessible as required in 680.12

680.41 refers to an Emergency switch to shut down the pumps, say if someone got their hair caught in the intake. It's not the same thing as a maintenance disconnect. This seems to be a common point of confusion for some people, maybe different wording would help there.

Re: Hot tub wiring

The only confusion came when an inspector mentioned it. I was pretty clear on it until then. We mostly did put a disconnect in regaredless.

I have to stop listening to inspectors.

Re: Hot tub wiring

In my area[Long Island,N.Y.] many elec. read this as saying they no longer needed a disconect-that in fact the cut-off sw. that comes with the unit would suffice when in fact , as Bill mentioned ,the disconnect is still req. accessible and within sight of the equip .[for maint purposes]

Re: Hot tub wiring

does the gfci panel meet the requirements for emergency switch(680.41),and disconnect(680.12)?or do you need a seperate diconnect

Re: Hot tub wiring

I have a dead niece because of her hair got stuck in the drain. Why do people let kids use these as toys?
Maybe the emergancy disc and service disc could be one and the same, depending on layout.
