ON a single family dwelling does the 2005 nec require a disconnect on the outside of the dwelling for a hot tub.

The disconnect can be integral to the unit and still comply with the requirement. An external disconnect is not always required for a single family dwelling.

I don't read it that way. Outdoor spa's must meet 680 Parts I and II
Under 680.12 in Part I, "....(disconnect) shall be 5 ft horiz. from the inside wall of the pool, spa"

Augie, what year are you looking at, they took that requirement out in the 2002 code.

Hot tub

Hot tub

If the hot tub's disconnect is integral, I see no reason for any additional external disconnect.
P.S. This question I saw in a electrical test from a student.

P.S.S. Be careful shooting from the hip.

Sorry if I didn't make my self clear I didn't mean to say that it was required to be external. If it's integral I wouldn't require a second one. Unless there is no GFCI protection, which there is not, in some of the older spas.

My read on it is that - No, there does not need to be one ON the outside of the building - but does need to be visable and accessible from the motor equipment - in any application. In single family it would not need be visable to the occupant.... That said, if you you have GFCI protection prior to the disconnecting means - it could be under the skirt of a factory made tub - visable to the pool guy..... Or in some custom situation - visable from the pumps...

That said it most likely will be OUTSIDE - but not necessarily ON the building.

I should have made reference to which Code cycle--sorry
My inspection area is actually still on ;02 but when here I usually reference '08.
