We have a contractor that argues whether the wiring in the hotel has to be in MC cable or not. What is the norm for a 4 story wood construction hotel. Does it all have to be the same or just in some areas MC Cable. Where in the 2002 NEC does it address this.

Re: Hotels

It doesn't have to be MC cable. It can be MI cable if you really want. You could also use RMC for the whole job.

Are you wanting to know if you can use Type NM cable?

Re: Hotels

You can use what ever wiring method as allowed in its scope allowed. RMC is an excellent choice if its a time and materials job.
NM may be used depending on the type construction the hotel is. The type constuction is shown on the cover sheet. If you are in Washington state there are some state rules in the WAC to be aware of for using NM cable.

i think he is in the permit office.Your in a tough spot.If he meets the specs then i guess you gotta allow romex.I assume thats where this is going

Re: Hotels

Just wanting to make sure it is done correctly. It was dicussed to use MC cable in the common and public areas, Lobby, pool, exercise room and corridors. But if he wanted to use just romex it would be allowed I guess is my question.

Re: Hotels

I am supprised that a 4 story building can have wood construction. I thought the limit was 3 stories?

At any rate, the NEC says that in other than dwelling structures, NM cable must be concealed by a finish with a 15Min rating. So the contractor will have to verify that every wall, ceiling, and floor they run NM cable in has a 15 min rating.

Re: Hotels

Just finished (2) hotels, 4 floors each and all wood framed. Sinced MC is not allowed in our jurisdiction, we opted to use ent. ENT can be obtained on 1500 ft. spools, and that made the job much easier. Also, the entire building was sprinklered, so we were able to use it in halls, and common areas. The only thing we had to watch was our fill tables.
