House fires

In addition to fires, there have been fatalities due to the work of handyman type 'electricians'. A notable example is where the 'electrician' used the EGC in a UF or Romex feeding a garage as a traveler for a 3 way light, energized the garage door, and killed a little kid.
DO YOU KNOW WHERE AND WHEN THIS HAPPENED ?

Here in Calif., you don't need a permit until it is over $500, but if it is, you need a license, unless you are the homeowner and are doing ALL of the work yourself. If you sub out parts of a homeowner permitted project the subs have to be licensed. Inspectors in my area are keen on that.

I did my own electrical on an addition on my house years ago, the inspector watched me like a hawk, even though I told him I had been licensed in another state but was not doing contracting any longer once I moved. He went over every little detail, but passed me. When my neighbor did his own addition a year later, the inspector drove by when I was in my front yard one day and stopped to say "I saw your work on your neighbor's panel, nicely done!" He was trying to trick me into saying I had done it (I had not).

You dont need to sign anything to get a right and if we look at a permit, explains all the terms we are to comply with, doesnt say it does anything for us but we agree to comply with all the terms.

IMO licensing doesn't make a bit of difference. Two of the worst electricians I have ever met were licensed guys.
I went to a concrete batch plant one time for an air compressor that was tripping the breaker. They said they thought it was a mechanical issue. An electrician (With a Philly License no less) had installed a new motor when the old one burned up. Sometimes on startup it was tripping the breaker.

I find a brand new single phase capacitor motor on it, with the heaters jumped out. And it's connected across A and B of an open delta. I traded the guy even for a used 3 phase motor I had, anjd connected the overloads I only charged labor. They were happy

I guess Mr Philly License didn't understand that 3 wire electricity.

BTW, original motor burned up because they covered the entire compressor with a non ventilated steel enclosure. So it wouldn't get damaged

This could go on a long ways. Onne of the best troubleshooters on anything electro me chanical is a tv repair man by trade, never been to school for that either. Only formal training he ever had was a year or 2 hs auto shop. I know a couple 3 legit masters in several trades also. They trouble shoot with,,, well most of them, etc and when I wanna know I call the tv guy, its got a failed hi miint on a secondary,,, whatever or a resistor on a board of electrically reversable with 3 relays , my master bud bout passes out,,, the tv man is grumpy and complains a little at first but puts his finger on it.

I've noticed a correlation between house fires and satellite dishes. It seems that if there are too many dishes on a block, there will soon be a house fire there, even if the house that burns is just next to a house with an unfavorable dish to house ratio.

This is a before picture

And here is the house on the right burning

There has to be something to this

I wonder if those dish fires are a result of open neutral somewhere making current travel through a poor dish ground.
