I am building a 3400sqft house and having a little trouble with the service. I have done alot of industrial work and helped with some residential so I have the bacground but I need some advice on this. I will have 2 hot water heaters, a flat top range, double oven, geo thermal heating, and, two dryers. There is nothing special about anything else in the house as far as loads. I was going to put a 200amp service in but am second guessing that. Any thoughts on service size?

200 seems right but would need more info. Typically I would just put a 400 amp because around here HO add alot of extras in the years to come.

Go to mikeholt.com scroll down to free stuff and then go to electrical formulas. There is an excel spreadsheet for residential service calculations.

Thanks. I won't be adding anything, first of all its in the middle of the woods and I will never need an outbuilding. I will have alot of convenience outlets but that shouldn't pull anything just uses up space quick.

Look into the geo thermal heating as far as electric backup required. Also some poco's will permit a seperate meter for the geo thermal.

That used to be the comment when 60 ampere services were installed for the 'new' electric ranges and a few light bulbs in the middle of the rooms. 400 ampere services are pretty common anymore.

Other than doing a thorough load calc, I would use whether there is resistance heating as backup for the HVAC as the deciding factor.

It is bad when you put a 200 Ampere service in your house 22 years ago(well father did) but now your putting a 400 Ampere panel with 80 circuit spaces... I'm young but it's always getting bigger... whats next 3 phase 480V?

Post the load requirements for the oven, cook top, etc. and we will give better advise. In my area all heating is gas, all dryers are gas, most ranges are gas. This makes 200 amp service more then adequate for much larger houses then 3400 sq ft.
