How can people do this kind of work?

So I was doing some work in a store today and had to run a few feeds. So I went down to the panel and they had five panels total and all the others worse than this one. This is the only one that I felt somewhat safe taking the cover off of. The others seemed to be spring loaded covers haha. Now I have to go back tomorrow and if I feel brave I will try to take some pictures of the other panels without the covers on but no promises. I just wanted to share to you a few pictures. Do enjoy:roll:

Wow,

Looks like it is a Spaghetti store. Hmm...bet they didn't have a spare role of tape to do some re-identifying those white wires.

i remember doing a job in a local pizza shop around here, i opened the panel they had and honest to god there was 75 NM cables going into a 42 circuit panel, only circuits that were not doubled up were the 2 pole breakers. i ended up pulling a lot of the circuits out and putting a sub panel right next to it in the wall. im not sure why people do this kind of work either its pretty disgusting sometimes

love it when they take the wire to the bottom of the can and then up to the breaker. or they leave 5" of romex sleeve past the connector.

He is in MA, we don't do a lot of re-identifying.

If someone can't tell the white wire connecting to a breaker is a hot conductor they probably should not be in the panel. :D

We have an amendment that allows us not to re-identify the white used as a switch leg. We don't have an amendment for these in the panel but it has pretty much become 'trade practice'.

60 - 80 circuit? in one can?
the 2008 code removed the 42 circuit limitation on panels. they make large panels like that for canada electricians. they look to be a little larger than normal panels and a lot more room from the picture

Oh and the other panels are far far worse but I am to scared to open them. But they only have the center scews holding them in and the covers are pushing out and you can see the wires. Its wicked freaky!

This looks like multiple remodel/upgrades by electrical hacks working for customers that don't want to spend money. I personaly would add a circuit to it or replace a breaker but a service change would require beautifying that freaking mess.

.

You know, the last time I tried that arguement with the inspector, he suggested I pull out that trusty roll of black electrical tape.

Wow!! I don't think that the person or people wiring had much care for tidiness do you? That is absolutely why only qualified electricians should wire

In pix #3, there's a cage off to the left. Is that for a small fan to blow air across the panel to keep it cool? I've seen that trick before.
