why is it odd?

I think it must be a local thing around here, I think if you meet certain criteria you can use romex, but its almost never done, I think if you have below a certain amount of occupancy, wood structure, two stories or less, but almost everything going up around here is steel structure so thats one reason right there.... didnt say it was wrong, just looks odd;)

I have used NM in commercial myself in NC after consulting the local, but I will say it sure as heck didn't look like that, nothing exposed.

MA has relaxed the NM requirements in the NEC for a long time, and still does to this day.

That is true but lets not lose site of the fact that the NEC still does not prohibit NM in commercial occupancies.

It's odd here because they don't allow any NM in commercial. And I've never seen a house with 3o...

Same here your not allowed to used NM in commercial but I am guessing the person(s) who installed this mess didn't really care or didn't know the code:roll:

Oh and the other panels are far far worse but I am to scared to open them. But they only have the center scews holding them in and the covers are pushing out and you can see the wires. Its wicked freaky!
These panels did not get this way over night. It took a while. Someone did crapy work and other crapsman added to the mess and compounded the problem.

Now comes dSilankas to do some electrical work, and you're faced with the dilemma of giving them a huge bill to fix it all, or tossing another log on the fire.

I would bet lunch, that the guy in charge would be glad for you to clean that mess up, except for cost and downtime. He will want you to just put on a band aid rather than major surgery.

Of course. I was just pointing out how those of us in Mass and New England in general will say usually "So what?" about things like exposed NM, NM in commercial, etc.

The rest of the country will have a hissy fit about it. :D

That's not true at all. As Bob said, the NEC allows it.

Furthermore, seeing that you're a Massachusetts guy I'm surprised you're not aware of the state amendments that have relaxed the NEC rules regarding NM.
