Hey guys Ive been at my new company for about a month. Past two weeks Ive had a solid helper. I know how much he makes through discussions he brings up. He only has 3 months experience but has a decent grasp on the resi side. I also know green helpers are making as much as he does. My question is how would you aproach your pm and ask him for a raise for your helper. As you dont want him to know that you know how much your helper makes?

Re: how do you get a helper a raise

I think that it is commendable that you would consider going out of your way to do that for someone!!
Just tell your pm "I don't know if this kid makes the same wages as any of the other guys, but he stands head and shoulders above them in the knowledge he posesses and the ammount of work he can accomplish" or something like that.
The actual wage doesn't have to come into it.

Re: how do you get a helper a raise

As his leader you need to know what he makes so that you know what to exspect from him in terms of speed and knowledge. If thats not possable then let the owner know what you think of his work.

The fastest way for you to get him more money is to fire him!! I'll bet he starts with a new company for more than he's making now.

A nice "raise" that doesn't involve money is getting him enrolled in an apprenticeship program or getting some books for him. This will provide him with his own ability to demand a higher wage through education. In my opinion, that is the most vaulable service you could provide to your helper.

Re: how do you get a helper a raise

speed is crap. having knowledge of doing multiple assignments correct is far better than being fast. alot of people with speed dont think, in which they mess things up more than a person that puts in the effort to get done in the right manner. like they say speed kills. if the apprentice shows that he has the will to learn and work, and show up everday, and puts in his best effort, he should get rewarded.

Re: how do you get a helper a raise

Despite what has been said to get a helper a raise takes but one thing .You going in there and saying what you said here.Plain and simple. If he is worth a raise then he/she is worth speaking up for.

Re: how do you get a helper a raise

As an employer, I do rely on input from my employees to assess other employees. So just make sure you tell the boss exactly how you feel about this helper.

Re: how do you get a helper a raise

first off,,your a great guy for thinking of your helpers well being,,you don't see much of that anymore.
being an employer myself,i need to know how the guys are doing in the field,
so what if you know how much he makes,,
being his supervisor, don't you do his evaluation,
if the kid deserves more $$,speak up for him,
how much can it be?another 1.00,if that what it takes to keep a good helper, give it to the kid.
its "only" 40$ a week,,im sure its in the budget,
if your employer thinks 40$ is a lot of money, than he need to get out more.
