how do you guys usually split mc

Rotosplits 98% of the time. On an MC job it's just too awkward and time consuming to do it any other way, especially when working above a ceiling. The Roto's are just great for that.

first of all i HATE mc but when i do have to use it the roto is the only way to go and ive always used red devils, if your not supposed to use them then why does mc come whith a pack of them?

Probably because of tradition. They are recommended by the manufacturers, but not required by the NEC. Nobody says you are not supposed to use them, it's just that most electricians are more comfortable using them then not.

If I was making all the terminations, I would probably leave them out. But if I had people working for me I would insist they be used.

Depends on how many times I need to split it, and how far the truck is.

If it's just one piece, and I need to cut two ends, out come the side-cutters. If I'm running the stuff all day long, I carry the rotosplit. If the GC, plumbers, sheetrockers or tinners have pissed me off, I prefer a 9mm semi-auto.

True or False?

Was the roto-split invented because a left-handed person cannot use a hacksaw on armored cable?

Haha! I learned that in school about the rotosplit. I'm left handed and I've used a hacksaw, dykes, and others. I still prefer the rotosplit over all of them. One turn and it's through the armour, no worries about going too deep and nicking the insulation.

I'm not left handed, but I learned that in school also, and was just wondering...

I use redheads but I believe MC cable is listed without the redhead being installed. We had athread on this awhile ago. I am not saying don't use them just that someone said it was listed without the redhead.

Yeah. I guess the code requires it for AC but not MC. Can anyone back this up I don't have my book. Also any idea WHY?

I figured I owed it to Jim and Bob to let them know they had forced me to repent and recant. ;)
Them guys are sharp :)

Anti short Bushings A.K.A. redheads

Anti short Bushings A.K.A. redheads

Yeah that is true the redheads always come with the reels of mc...I always use redheads anyways.....I think that just because you don't have to do something that you should not do it...after all from what I have learned the code meets minimum safety standards why not go the extra few seconds and put a redhead on the mc.

when you are the one paying for the trip back to the job to fix it,,,,,that little extra effort seems like very little effort. If I don't have the reds I wrap the inner plastic wrapping around the conductors 5 or 6 times as an insulator to the sharp edge of the MC. "220-221 what ever it takes"

yup

yup

I guess it comes down to whatever it takes to make you feel you are not gonna have to come back to a job trying to figure out what is going on for 6 hours instead of a few seconds to do whatever it takes sometimes more than what the code states...well thanx for the posts guys...thats what I like about this site you ask any question and it always gets answered.

I use a rotosplitter. And I started using redheads too, in case anyone was curious. :D

I use redheads and bed blondies, but I'm still looking for a nice brunette to marry.

usually if Is steel MC ill use my roto splits but if its the soft stuff why bother? its just another tool to add to your belt and you can work a lot faster with a pair of dykes.
