How many 2x4 lights...

I have a business asking how many 2x4 lights they need for 10,000 sq. ft. of space. They are friends of mine and want to make sure the electrician they hired isn't screwing them over. I would do it, but can't pull a permit yet. Only a JW atm
They currently use 1x8 strip lights. Don't know how many.

If you are looking for a genral number you can go to almost any lighting manufacture's web site and get a lighting design calculator. If you know what fixture they using go to that site. They are relativly easy to use if you have the basic information. Demensions and surfaces of the rooms.

So at 130x75 with 15' ceilings , 2x4 3 light 32w T8 parabolic troffer, at 50 footcandles you are looking at 60 fixtures.

Is this just one big open warehouse? what is the space going to be used for and how high are the ceilings?

I'm assuming this is going to be an office area with equipment or cubicles in it. You're going to need anywhere from 55 - 65 luminaires. Anything above 65 is probably going to be overkill.
