Re: How many manufactures

Thanks Ryan

Had a house inspected yesterday had two GE AFCIs on the van used one in the siemens panel.

It passed inspection don't no if he noticed the name or not he looked at it very close. He usually turns down siemens breakers in a GE Panel or vise versa.

Didn't look at the listings on the breaker. Is there an exception when it is a rare item as far as the compatibility maybe, knew better than to ask him.

Re: How many manufactures

If the breaker is not listed for the panel than it is a vilolation. No execptions on availability. I beleive all manufacturers are producing AFCI breakers for their panels. Tough to sell panels you don't have breakers for I would think.

Re: How many manufactures

Scott what you say is probably true.

But another strategy of GE or Siemens might be well we need to go ahead and list this particular item or breaker for the other equipment that it meets specs. for and maybe since it will be very expensive to engineer and produce the other makers want tool up to manufacture it.And in turn it will be good for our sales.

Re: How many manufactures

Breakers must be either listed or classified for use in the panel. The only breakers that are listed for use in a panel would be those that are manufactured by the same company as the panel. Classified breakers are breakers that have been investigated by UL under the same standard as listed breakers, but these breakers are classified for use in panel made by a company other than the breaker manufacturer. If the breaker is not listed or classified for use in that panel it is a code violation. Note that classified breakers are required to come with a list of panels that they have been classified for use in. Some breakers will be listed for use in a panel and classified for use in other panels.

Re: How many manufactures

GE, Siemens, CH and Sq D all manufacture AFCIs.

UL allows for two options when installing breakers in loadcenters;

1. Same manufacturer is allowed (e.g. Ge breakers in GE loadcenter) or

2. UL Classified breakers can be installed in a loadcenter. Classified breakers mean a manufacturer has tested and certified them with UL for use in another manufacturer's loadcenter.

Cutler Hammer offer classified breakers (including AFCI's) for all other manufacturers' loadcenters (1" and 3/4"). I am not sure about GE, Siemens or Sq D although they may also.

Looks like you got an inspector who wasn't paying attention...

Re: How many manufactures

In speaking with Square D, they have said that they will not warranty any of their panels without their breakers as they have not tested their panels with any breakers other than the ones that are listed on the enclosure. Cutler Hammer has said the same thing.
