How many receptacles?

two would be required per 2014 NEC 210.52(D), but this is only for dwelling unit bathrooms. "In dwelling units, at least one receptacle outlet shall be installed in bathrooms within (3ft) of the outside edge of EACH basin."

But if the two basins are less than 6' apart, wouldn't one receptacle between them meet the code? It might not be a great design, but OK nevertheless.
When it says "outside edge" it does not mean the edge furthest from a possible second basin.
And it did not say one receptacle per basin.

Suppose that the back wall directly behind the basins is for some reason not available. If the basins were 24" in diameter and 6" apart, one receptacle within 3" of the outer edge of either basin would cover them both.

That's a good point GoldDigger. I don't think I've ever seen one installed in the middle of two basins, but you are correct in that it would meet the interpretation of the code. Personally, I'd go for one on either side, but personally =/= code. Great follow up!

Technically one single receptacle would do the trick, but...

One duplex receptacle would meet code but I have never thought of doing it that way.

I once worked on a big house with 5 bathrooms that all the receptacles were on the same circuit. May meet code but a really dumb idea. If they can afford a double sink I'm sure they can afford and extra receptacle.
