How much do one man shop guys make

I think we all know that. The context here was an "upsell" on an already contracted job, where all that should have already been covered. He bragged about doing this upsell while he was already on site doing a panel swap. This wasn't a stand alone upsell with a truck roll for just an SPD install. This was a pure $450 profit for a 5 minute conversion.
What do you have against a guy making a few bucks? No one forced the customer to buy anything.

People buy jeans with holes in them. And pay a lot more than if they didn't have holes in them.

I would feel different if the total charge was not discussed before the install. Here now on the 2020 panel swap means you get a whole house surge but even the $60 ones meet that requirement so yes selling them on something nicer from that point exceeding code now would be understandable when a cheeper option existed.

I am not convinced that on the whole SPDs are worth what they cost but since they are now required, it is up to the guy paying for it to decide what he wants.

More consumer appliances require whole house SPD, or refuse to honor warranty, doesn't matter if existing electrical service > 100 yrs old.

Also HVAC contractors replacing circuit boards under warranty want outlet SPD, non of which honor any warranty without whole house SPD.

I charge 4k minimum for a overhead service upgrade. They're my most profitable service. Afci doesn't get added at service change unless moving panel more than 6ft
Do inspectors ignore all replacement outlets in house that trigger 406.4(D)(4), or is your work not inspected?

I used to lose 2-3 devices a year up at my recreational property, GFCIs, motion lights, WiFi router, etc, haven't lost a single one since I installed an SPD 2 years ago.

I wonder how often you get ripped off/oversold on stuff you don't even know about? But I guess that's ok, because he's just making a few bucks, right?

Don't you watch Electric Pro Academy? He's pushing this "million dollar truck" philosophy....1 truck, 2 guys, 2K(gross) per day per guy.
That doesn't sound that outrageous if their a good tech team.
I bill out at almost $1,500.00 per day for myself and a second year apprentice.
With two licensed guys on a job I would be just shy of that rate.
