"To the first post:

Did you reference this to him yet and did he thank you?

Yes, some inspectors do say thank you.

You should post up with the followup."

Yes we brought this to his attention and he spent about 30 minutes in the 2002 Code book trying to find the article that covered it. We told him what it said in 312 and 314 and after reading it he still thought there was another article that covered the max sheath length. He did finally pass the job.

I think it would be a violation to have too much sheath if it resulted in not having 6" of free conductor.

Don't feel bad Ryan. I have not heard of "RX" Myself and before I read the post I was assuming a typo for "BX'.

Article 300.14 covers that in that is says you have to have "at least 6 in. of free conductor measured from the point in the box where it emerges from its raceway or cable sheath". It does not specify the max allowable length of the sheath, however.

One item of note: 2005's 314.16 makes a stink about putting twice the amount of conductor in a box as required.

If I remember correctly, you have to double the conductor fill allowance in the box if you have twice the needed conductor length.
