Bob - excellent point! That would not look right, no matter what colored glasses you are wearing.

I'm spending the next few days handing out some "Thank You" cards with some greenbacks in them. I think the pay back will be greater than the gift.

It must look a little questionable to have an inspector show up on the job wearing a fleece jacket with your logo. I wonder what his supervisor thinks about that.

It is not illegal, I do not ask for him to wear it on inspections and I am not stopping anyone else from doing the same thing.;)

Really it's just being nice.. We also ordered the entire construction department a basket of pineapples.

Over the top,, no other way to go,,

If I were a competing contractor I might slip a message the the AHJ about evidence that the inspectors are in the pocket of the company furnishing the jackets.
About a year ago I was at a supplier to p/u an order and the counter guy was wearing one of my competitors' t-shirts. I wouldn't give him my order until he changed shirts. It may sound petty to some but I like playing on a level field.

So slipping the guy back door cash is a better plan!!

I would not have changed my shirt.

I always see counter guys and inspectors with hats shirts etc from the competition.

edamico11 - I didn't say I was buying off the inspectors. My work passes without a tip. I specifically said "counter guys (or gals for that matter). Those are the guys that might throw some references my way. I have had two inspectors (from different towns) ask if they minded them referring people - I said absolutely no problem. They both indicated that they were impressed with the quality of my work - and that's what I am building my reputation on. I'm not bragging, just stating a few circumstances. It's nice when an inspector tells ya that!

actually i think everyone is looking at this wrong, go ahead-flame away, but i'll explain.

everything we do all year long is to build business, correct?

but this time of year, do things just to do them.

don't tip the counter guy because they might give you a referral. Tip the counter guy because he put up with your BS all year. Tip him because he always says "hi, how ya doing" when you walk in. Tip him because all year long, he gave your guys respect because of you.

in otherwords tip him if he deserves it for what he's done, not because of what you hope he might do for you.

Very well said.

And you would not have gotten my order. I buy easily twice as much material as my largest local competitor, pay my bills on time and even allow the suppliers to use stock from my own warehouse to sell to my competition in a pinch. But I have some qwirks, and one of them is that I don't like seeing the counter people advertise my competitors. So keep the shirt on (just turn it inside out)

And the guy at the counter actual cares where you buy?

To each their own. :)
No but his boss might. And thank you IWIRE. "to each his own" is how I live and why I'm self employed.

Happy New Year!
