There is no test for J-Man or Masters. So I just registered with the state for $75 and got a business. I was 18, still am 18.

Of course it was just for side work while I'm going to college, and after thinking profusely I am not ready to start a fully operational company because I don't have enough experience or capital:mad:.

And my mind changes weekly with what I want to do for the rest of my life. - Just like me waking up one morning and registering for a business.

I was 33 in 1975 when I took and passed the Block & Assoc. exam for a Masters License in Indianapolis. I let them go in 1980 after going though a divorce and deciding that burning a candle at both ends was not a good idea. I stayed with the Indianapolis Power & Light Company where I retired and now work as a consultant.

Journeymans - 28 - because I just served 9 years with Uncle Sam, and the state said I didn't know anything (even though I had wired in 6 states and 4 countries...) Fought with them for 1 1/2 years before I wore them down and they finally said "Fine! Take your test!" Hoping I would fail... but I didn't...
Masters - 33 - because I just plain forgot... besides, I was finishing up my EE.
EC - 33 - 8 months later...when a young one I knew was ready to take it, I figured I better hurry up...)

Now, 2 1/2 years later and 8 employees later... I'm ready to go back as a foreman...

I was 26 in a Virginia county. Told everyone failed the test over the phone. Hurried over to the permit office ready to fight. Chief Inspector said calm down I was the only that passed ..score of 86. I was still mad. Said I scored 100% and wanted to see the test. He said they were all destroyed and just take my license.

Another city in Alabama said no need to apply, they had all the electricians they needed!

I was 21 when I got Mass. J-Man

I was 25 when I got Mass. Masters

I was about 30 when I got Mass. Construction Supervisors ( grandfathered in )

Now I'm in Az. there are no state j-mans, just business lic.s . I let all the Mass. stuff expire.

16 years of age!

1977, walked into the small town in which I was living in Oklahoma, gave the the city clerk $25 and posted a $500 bond, and was a licensed electrical contractor.

I didn't know diddly (I had one year of vocational school), but I was a licensed contractor.

Sorta same story here...in 1978 took a flimsy test in our town....later "grandfathered" in when the state took over licensing in the early 80's...So I weezel'ed in :D

Later passed block test from the state on Electrical 1 and 2 family, Electrical Unlimited, and Electrical Plans Examiner when I as an inspector. Then I left inspections...haha

sounds like most people got their licenses way before they should have>.....kinda like me

Things around here have really been much tougher for the younger guys. The State really tightened up on having one Journeyman for two apprentice on a job sites, which really drove alot of folks to take their test. Okra-homa has a high flunk rate for Journeyman test, but but when you re-take your test, you only have to take the portions that you failed in. Im proud of our younger guys, because they dont operate in the "good ole boy" network that I came up in.
