Late to discussion, but 70 or so years ago repaired first television set; progressed to spacecraft design in later years

It is this: repair or build everything at home for yourself, learn ALL the trades as you go. Amazing how technologies crossbreed. For instance, you can design hydraulics using Maxwells equations. General engineering knowledge gives you the confidence to rebuild a car engine or design a septic system; that basic strength of materials course you took is a foundation to build yer own house. . Plus you will save a LOT of $$ along the way. Very difficult however to do your own medical, dental and legal work yerself, as those 'trades' have erected very DIY prohibitive rules.
