how to covert 12v dc battery life in ac use?

I'm not a wizard of electric so forgive any flaws in question.
If i were to have a series of batteries and wanted them to run something on 240ac. Is there an formula to find out how many volts i would need and how long the batteries would last under a certain load once coverted to ac?
My question might need more explaining
