Also if the neutral should be lost to this panel, and it contains circuits with grounding conductors connected to the neutral buss such as water heater or furnace, the neutral cuurent will find it's way to the water and gas piping thru these grounding conductors. I once had a call where that very thing happened and the gas pipe was actually burnt black and smoking where it passed thru a plaster ceiling making contact with the metal lath.
