How to know which version of NFPA 99 to apply

Here in MA, I see, as per our Chapter 35 amendments to the 2009 IBC (the thing that constitutes our building code), that we have adopted only the 2005 version of the NFPA 99. I thought we had to go by a later version than that. In fact, I thought we had to go by the 2012 version.

I'm wondering if DPH requires something in excess of what the state requires and/or whether or not I'm missing something in the Mass code reference.
