I have taken the industrial journeyman test several times still I don?t reach the 75% to get my license. I feel my big problem is not understanding what they are asking with there twisted questions. Please any help.

Thank you in advance

Which license are you going for? Were you an Oregon apprentice or are you licensed in another state? Journeyman exam ore supervisors exam?

There's a lot to learn. The field is broad.

Keep talking. Keep reading.

The questions you didn't get show the places to focus more attention.

I've been in the field 40 years and I am still constantly learning new stuff.

I still don't get all the test questions.

Sometimes it helps as you read the questions to mark, or make note of, key words in the question. Most of the time it's that one little key word or phrase that we miss that makes all the difference in our answer.

You have to accept that others are passing the same test you are failing, what do think the difference for them is ?

Do they study harder , do they apply them selves harder in their work tasks and solve difficult problems for others on the job ?

Testing should be reasonably difficult and in my opinion geared to exposed those who have done their studies, hard work, and reward them with a certification or license and just as well deny those who simlpy have "time in" to take a test but don't have the ability to answer complex questions and make reasonable decisions.

Perhaps the test questions seem twisted and tricky but out in the field the situations will be just as equal , there will not always be a easy solution to difficult problems that arise and one's experience and ability will be exposed during these times.

I for one am glad that the testing system is difficult and just don't hand out licenses to anyone who just has "time in" .

Drg you have raised some points that lead me to believe that twisted was not good word to use to get help about the NEC test.
What I was trying to ask was how all of you that have passed the journeymen test, was how you kept your focus on the key words with out burning time going down the wrong trail. Maybe some of you have struggled to pass the test that would be willing to share with an apprentice how to keep his head up.

Thanks for the support Bobby BJR and AL hildbrand

Mike holt has a section where you can take practice exams, good book stores have exam preperation books for journeyman electrician.

You can also spend countless hours here on the forum over the next few years learning , try following some of these threads here on electrical codes , you will soon see that this can be a very complicated business .

Some of the test questions maybe twisted , some of the NEC seems twisted also, your not the only one who feels that way but don't let it be your crutch because we are all on the same playing field .

Let me ask a simple question of you, do you really feel that you put in the hard hours of study and purchase the written materials that are out for these exams ?

drg yes this last test I had a whole year to prepare the last six months I spent three to four yours a day except Sundays that was family time. I have purchased Tom Henry Exam
Questions 2002 AND 2005 also my favorite 1999 Mike Holt Electrician?s Exam Preparation. I also took a class in basic electronics. My boss has made sure that we have
A good understanding electronic and Ditgal Witch makes good troubleshooters at the plant.

Miller I appreciate the fact that you study and have the couarge to come here and say you failed several times to pass the journeymans test .

Im not trying to discourage you or berate you either but sometimes we need to face facts , perhaps the line of work your in does not give you the exposure to the construction side of electrical work that journeyman testing is geared for , if I were asked to troubleshoot digital equipment and programmable logic controls in the morning I would be lost and get a swift kick in the pants for even trying.

I would bet that the testing you are taking is quite different than what you normally do everyday for a living and that is what complicates things for you.

Oregon Journeymans

The Oregon Journeymans exam answers can be tricky as you need to choose the MOST correct.

Tom Henrys keyword index is a must for speed to find anwers. You should be able to find each answer for reference . Also his sample tests are good learning and practice to find answers fast.

Normally to take the Journeyman exam you must have the hours required by building codes in commercial ,industrial, resi, comm as an apprentice.

drg Thanks for that last thread you hit the nail on the head. I don?t have a place for some of the code to land. But each test helps me to understand my weakness in the book. I will never give up I like working with electrons so I will post thread when I do pass.

Tom Henrys keyword index

Tom Henrys keyword index

Thanks Oreelect I do have Tom Henry keyword index. I don?t use it for every question I mainly rely on the table of contents and a good understanding of the NEC book and how it is laid out. If that don?t work then I use the keyword index. Maybe I should use it more?

I like to use the keyword index as it is small. I add to the index also when I run into something that took to long to find. I always like a reference to back up an answer.
By the time I get use to the latest code book then the next issue comes.

Miller just how many times is several? I also work in a lumber mill and I learned alot about the code during different installation projects from my boss and journeyman at the mill. I also took a code class at the local commiunty college, along with my other apprentice classes. Did you take any classes besides electronics and digital?

SparkSparky101 I Live in remote area on the west Coast its three hours to anywhere. So every thing I have learned about the NEC was from the Lumber Mill. Yes its wonderful place to learn. No, our community college does not offer a code related class. All this
makes me feel like I?m singing the blues, that just not me. Several lets say more than three.

What's so funny? More than three? Steve Or Tim? I was trying to help you figure out your short comings on the code test! I guess I was wastening my time trying to help you, because you apparently you aren't very serious about your test!
