How come rotophase converters are rated in HP, but then the instructions from the manufacturer says to use one rated 50% higher? 10 hp motor, use 15 hp phase converter. Why not just rate the 15 hp as a 10!

When you are using an unmodified three phase motor as your rotophase, you should use the 50% adder between idler motor and load motor.
Other than that, the HP rating of a Rotophase will really depend on the starting load characteristics of the driven motor and its load. Fans easy, loaded conveyor belts hard!

Vacuum pump for a CNC machine for cutting wood. I would think it is not a hard start like an air compressor. The rotophase is factory set up as a converter, so I don’t know why they wouldn’t have already built in the 50% for the 10 hp rating.
