Art 625 in the 2005 NEC allows a vechicle, if listed for the purpose, to serve as a power supply to a electrical system.
What would the typical capacity of a hybrid vechicle be for this use, in Kw?
This is a great concept, use your car to power your house in an outage. Its safe and less noisey than a generator.

Re: Hybrid Vechicles as Power Source

there are some vehicles that come with built in inverters these days.

you can also buy a generator that goes under the hood and cranks out power for you.

Re: Hybrid Vechicles as Power Source

What about the mountains of dead batteries that these vehicles will one day create?

Ooops...wrong forum.

Tom coming from a farming family and being a redneck myself, the first thing that comes to my mind is a tractor with PTO. I have seen them turning a generator in the 36 KW range pumping bessie. :D

The GMC Sierra 2005 will have 4 120 volt recep's two in the bed and two in the cab (all GFCI). Nothing on GMC's website, but a test drive article said 20 amps available. Enough to keep your refer and FAU up.

Sounds perfect for tailgating... You could power a 42" plasma and minifridge off that, not to mention haul the grill in the back :D

Re: Hybrid Vechicles as Power Source

I just read an article about a hybrid car (I'm not sure if it was a prototype, or one that will actually retail) that had an 80KW electric motor powered by hydrogen fuel cells.

That would power my entire house, two other houses, and probably still keep bessie dry ;)
