I was wondering now many of us here on the forum are IAEI (International Association of Electrical Inspectors) members? I was an associate members a few years ago mostly to receive their excellent magazine. But then the periodical began to change, having more information about regional meetings than about electrical products, codes and inspections. So I declined to renew my membership. I was wondering if anyone here is a member and if they feel that it's worth the $90 per year?

I'm in!

Conisidering inflation the $90 is not all that bad, although you do not get as many benifits as you used to.

I joined the North Carolina Ellis Cannady Chapter in the spring of 1999 and have not regretted it.
I have not missed a meeting in the state and have made the last five Southern Sectional meetings. I was planning on making the Fort Worth meeting next month but I might have to cancel this one due to a job that I am doing.
I would remain a member even if the dues went as high as $500 a year, it cost me $300 dollars a year to be a member of the NCAEC which also has some great benefits.
The benefits that I receive as an IAEI member more than refunds me my monies and the new friends that I have made are priceless.

So should anyone out there want to join send me a PM and I will get you an application.

IAEI membership is great when you have an active local division or state chapter. I am fortunate that my Florida Chapter, Gulf-Coast Division meets every month in town I live and work. The central location allows for participation of at least 6 jurisdictions from the area. This makes it a great forum for contractors, design professionals, and vendors to get and give information about happenings in our industry.

I would also strongly recommend all you Florida forum members to become BOAF members. Go here for details: www.boaf.net

I've been an IAEI Member for roughly 20 years. I haven't been to meetings for some time because it's a long ride for me now, but I see a lot of the same people and hear what went on there at my local Electrical Contractors' Association meetings.

Even though I haven't made use of the benefits of Membership recently I've always considered my dues as supporting a good cause, and more than a magazine subscription. (And a free NEC Code Book)

I belong. Its not all that expensive compared to other orgainizations. The section meetings are very inexpensive and extremely cost effective. The magazine is OK, but it has a lot of fluff. However the local chapter meetings are free and you get CEUs. The electricians in the know go.

I'm not a member, but have been thinking of joining. I am a member of my state's inspector's association, of which at least half are also IAEI members.

For those who are members, was there a time when you needed to be an inspector to join? That's what I remember from the early '90's. After taking their exams, I was told you needed to be an inspector to join. I believe anyone can join now.

Not since I've joined (90's) Im not sure there ever was a rule but if ther was it was probably lifted for declining memberhip.

only inspector members can vote in our chapter.

Charlie, what chapter are you in? Paul Revere?

I looked into joining in '93, which is when I was told it was for inspectors only. I didn't really look into it again until about 3 years ago. My guess is they opened it up to increase membership.

I've been a member for three years and my work pays for it. If they didn't, I'd pay for it because of the local support and the magazine. My work and my other businesses keep me too busy for the committies.

I'm a member. I'm lucky enough to have my due's paid for by the city I work for.
I just stepped down from serving four terms as VP of the South Suburban Division, of the Illinois Chapter, in the Western section.

How many are on a committee with their local chapter?

I serve on both the NEC/FBC committee and ECF coordination committee. This December, I will be nominated to the board of directors and take over as Secretary of my Division.

I joined in 93 and am currently entering my third year as a board member, a nine year commitment. As with any organization, the quality and benefits are only as good as the leadership and effort put in. The national is dedicated to their stated purpose, see IAEI website, and here in Nebraska we also try. The only problem is below the national level it is a voluntary organization and requires dedication out of the leadership. I pay my own dues.

I joined the So Cal chapter about 10 years ago and I stay around 'cause I'm cheap. I've never seen so many great seminars and training session at such low prices. It also gives me a chance to talk with inspectors from all over my area and find out what they are taught and how they interperate the NEC.
