I agree also. I have found that when people are getting shocked by the water pipe, it is "usually" a utility issue. Check at the pole or at the weather head and see if you spot anything.

How long does it take to go check the ground, other than old service, these type of threads get to me 2, we're all here for no potential.

Put a wire directly on the neutral bus in the panel and run it to the bathroom and use that to take your voltage readings.Only then will you know what is realy hot. With k&t wiring you may very well have outlets that are wired backwards. Use your this same wire to make sure they are correct. You may very well have a device somewhere that is energizing your pipes.

Yeah it was a knob and tube circuit wired backwards. I was able to isolate it back to 2 lights and 2 switches which are inaccesable. It must have been useing the tin ceilings as the return path........... good now! Thanks guys! I was going over a thousand senerios in my head and sometimes its the most obvious ones..........

I get the picture of a duplex, but with a 480 VAC service... Seems kinda industrial to me. Is there a 480 VAC service? Is each Tenant's service independently metered?

its not 480! that wouldnt make much sense unless i had a heck of a machine shop in my basement!;) 120/240 1ph

Well I see that he found it, interesting that was the problem. The only K&T I've ever worked with was tearing it out and replacing it.

I just learned years ago, get the simple possibilities out of the way first. I will look at many things before I crawl in the attic and start rewiring stuff.
