...who performed the plan review for a "penthouse suite" in a local motel to get further detail on how the electrical contractor was going to
"electrify" the moving vanity drawer in the bathroom so the hairdryer could stay plugged in.

Of course he didn't persue specs and OK'd the plans for permit.

Anyone seen this before? And if so, what sort of wiring was done to make this possible without breaking a couple....three maybe four codes?

Re: I asked the Building Official.....

LOL...I asked this question here before, beacuse this lady was talking about how she was going to have a receptacle in a drawer...and the conclusion we all came to is it would practically be impossible. :)

Re: I asked the Building Official.....

I learned that arguing or making suggestions to the Building Official (who I do not think qualified for the position) gets me no where fast.

So as an inspector I get to deal with the crap when it falls out in the field.

It just gripes my *** as a Certified Inspector and having 8 years of electrical installations under my belt....compared to someone with NOTHING other than the friggin title.

Sorry to vent....I just went to bat with the City Electrical Engineer on another issue and we both got nailed to the cross on account of "lack of knowledge, logic and common sense".

Re: I asked the Building Official.....

The way I've seen it done and the way I did it the one time I did was to put a GFI receptacle in the wall inside the vanity space where the plumbing is. The hair dryer cord goes over the back of the drawer and "somebody" bores a hole in the cabinetry for the cord to get to the receptacle.

Re: I asked the Building Official.....

It good to know that I am not the only one that has a building official that is unskilled for the position. As a master electrician and a certified electrical inspector, my supervisor is not certified and has no building experience. Just to name a fews things... She allow people to move in without final inspections or c/o and accepts plans without the proper seal of approval.

Re: I asked the Building Official.....

I read the links provided on past conversations and by sparkslord's post I checked on suppliers of "retractile cord" as it is called. Northwire makes ones called enduroFLEX III which is what I feel is suitable for this application.

The contractor might not like the cost, but boo-hoo...been there done that.

Thanks much, as I still don't feel at ease allowing this, but you can only protect people to a certain extent.

Re: I asked the Building Official.....

I don't see what the big worry is. There are tons of things that if you really think about it would make you worry. Sound like a convenient idea. Set it and forget, that's my motto. :)
