You have got to love the lack of respect some people have for safety, I received an e-mail today from a "designer" this was one of the items I said I would not do because I felt it was a code violation.

" Add a plug in the back of the second drawer on the left side of master bath vanity for hair dryer. I know it is not to code, but she wants it."

Now I know there is some cutesy flex cord/cut in box thing you can buy to put an outlet in the drawer but it is not UL listed and I don't like the thought of owning a pile of ash that used to be someones house.:)

What code section do you believe your violating?

Also, do you mean like this one?

What wiring method would you use to get a plug into a drawer ?

Do you think it will hold up to the constant opening and closing of the drawer in MC ? Seems like it wouldn't last to me ? IMO :)

No way Jose is my answer/.

would it be legal to cut a recept in back of cabinet, and install box in back of drawer with SJO with cord cap to plug into wall for easy removal of drawer?

I think that violates 400.8 (1)

How about a receptacle inside the cabinet, behind the drawer, and a smooth hole in the back of the drawer?

Just tell the customer that the plug should be unplugged after every use.

I agree with Larry's idea.

I say it is not permitted as per400.8(1), (7). With the draw opening and closing how does one protect the cord.
The same would be for NM, how is it protected? Also how is the NM designed for being moved back an forth everyday???

Cut a hole in the back of the draw if she insists.

I have 3 girls and a wife...a service installed to the bathroom for all of their gadgets. This stuff gets well used at some homes.

Why doesn't the HO just buy the Binford 55,000 watt twin turbo intercooled dylthium ion flux capacitor battery powered hair dryer. My wife got one and shes smokin!

What is the "warm up" time on that. I could probably use 2 of them, but I am not sure if my 200 amp bathroom service can handle that with the curling irons, straightening irons, the lights, the fan, the phones, nail buffer, the stereo, jacuzzi, steamer, etc...

You would still need a receptacle at the sink area. What I have done is cut the receptacle in the cabinet, not the drawer. They can cut a notch in the back of the drawer. If they want to add a plug strip or something, then it is not on you. You just install the outlet in the cabinet and add one up top.

I think the flexible cord, if used in this way, may constitute an extension cord either that or it would be employed as a replacement for a wiring method. I would install the outlet on the cabinet or in the wall behind the drawer and let the H.O. supply the extension cord.

Though 400.7(9) is a good argument.

Now that I have given some thought to this, what is the purpose of a recept inside a drawer in a bathroom? what is wrong with just having the conventional recepts above the counter? as posted before, there is a hazard of a curling iron left on in a closed drawer. I would just pass on the whole idea...
