Don't know if it would be that simple with Generac, they have that weird controller they are so proud of. Thats why we have a brand new one thats been sitting at the warehouse for years now.

With a packaged unit like Generac's are that is the issue. With a somewhat stand alone alternator with excitation controls and little else for controls your options might be wide open. Many of those you also have to provide the prime mover yourself as well.

Yeah, I have always been able to convert Kohlers without a problem, but the op said it was a Generac.
