I wonder why

Way back when, when I worked in an auto parts store, I had to spend a few hours one night standing in the parking lot holding a fire extinguisher, because some guy was trying to wrap a fuse (I can't remember if it was ATC or a glass cartridge fuse) in the "foil" wrap from a stick of gum. Every time he stuck it in, it would start to smoke, so he'd pull it out and adjust the foil, then stick it back in. I kept trying to tell him it wouldn't work, and he kept telling me it had to, cause he kept blowing fuses. After an hour, I gave up and took the fire extinguisher inside and left him to his business. The store manager was worried that if his car caught fire in the parking lot, the parts store might be held liable.

I've done the same thing, although I used the inner wrapper from a pack of cigarettes.
It works well, but takes some practice to get the right amperage:grin: .
Anything to get home.
That was when I was still "wet behind the ears".:)

22 shell

22 shell

What about the story that was covered on Mythbusters about the guy that blew a headlight fuse on his old truck coming home from a hunting trip? He stopped to do a quick fix and stuck a 22 shell in the block for a fuse. The shell heated up and went off! He lost a testicle from the round!! :D

Yeah, but there were a LOT of variables that head to sit right. Like electrical modifications to the truck to carry enough amperage to ignite the powder. Sorta like a redneck truck would have. On top of that, firing a bullet from a cartridge without having the shell securely mounted sort of defeats the purpose of the bullet. The explosion resulting from the powder throws the shell back more than it throw the bullet, which doesn't happen in a gun. I doubt the bullet or shell would have done more than break the skin.

Good One
Brings back memories when I first started, I used to see foil and pennies behind fuses.
Don't see that much anymore

I have seen the tape before...
If memory serves right it was like packing tape all the way around, and may too have been a True Value or OSH bought jobby the HO got.

One of my first electrical memories was of my mom telling me to do the penny deal and having the panel spit it back out at me. Then the neighbor came down wondering why the lights were flickering when I yelled - and gave me and subsequently my mom a talking to about the penny trick.
