Global warming? Maybe.. like I said earlier, it's called "winter"! ....

Actually, if gobal warming occurs, the North American continent will generally get colder.
Experts say if global warming continues, the Gulf Stream will shut down. The heat it brings to the Gulf of Mexico will cease. No more balmy south & southeast USA, so no warm fronts holding back those Arctic Clippers that sweep down from Canada.

Actually, this has been completely discredited. This
BS, circulated by clowns, otherwise known as politicians
and journalists, was, however, well covered in the
media, peaking around 2004-2005.

Science magazine (not clowns) refuted this in R.A. Kerr's
2006 paper, "Global Climate Change -- False Alarm:
Atlantic Conveyor Belt Hasn't Slowed Down After All."
And New Scientist magazine (not clowns either, but
one of the original sources of the myths taken up by
the clowns) summed up the voluminous evidence
to the contrary in Nov 2006 in "No New Ice Age
for Western Europe."

However, the facts didn't make good headlines, so the
myth lives on.

It is quite frustrating to see so many smart people
with the wool pulled over their eyes by this nonsense.

It's a rain /sleet mix here right now, supposed to turn to snow. Temps right at freezing but they are calling for a high temp tomorrow of 2 degrees. Would be excited at the opportunities for service calls but I'm headed south tomorrow to work at two different industrial shut downs.

Some of you guys needed work!

We had a fairly bad ice storm here last year, worst on record. Some customers were without power 3 weeks or more. Most overhead drops that were close to tree limbs had damage. We repaired risers, weather heads, and meter bases for over 4 weeks. FEMA stepped in and paid the bill for those who applied.

My prayers go out to all those effected there in this storm.

Glad to see a good post! Problem with the politicians and media is that they have to have a story, If it bleeds, it leads...Rule by fear ...

Important thought! When it's really cold outside, to keep the water from freezing up, we used to let the water run at a trickle to keep the pipes from freezing. (This is from a guy who is used to being on a well) Just a thought if your pipes are in a "risky" location for those suffering this ugly weather burden.

We were lucky a couple years ago that the two ice storms in two weeks, the temp was mostly in the 20s & 30s for the first few days. Try months on generator for some towns to the South.

Be careful and good luck.

We did not charge any differently for calls at the time but I heard stories of those that were ___ without even being kissed.

6 PM Sunday night and there are still 617 houses without power in CT. Things are getting better tomorrow will be 50 degrees.

I cant help but ponder though, Its New England, people should be prepared for these situations, just like buying snow tires, yet people still go up hills diganonally... :-?

I think the way they look at it, it only happens once every few years so why be ready and spend the money for something you may not use for another 7 or 10 years. The last time we had a storm like this I was without power for a day and a half, but there were some places out for over a week. But let me say this when I got my generator about 9 years ago my wife didn't understand why I was spending money for something we didn't need. She changed her mind after the the first time the power went out and we used it.

It looks like National Grid and Northeast Utilities took the most damage to their systems. It's a good time to be a lineman right now!

Good luck guys....we had a bad one 3 years ago. We lost power for 7 days. I bought one of the last generators Sam's Club had. Some folks went weeks without power....I hope the best for you...been there, done that, got he generator to show for it.

BIt's crazy here. Phone has not stopped ringing. People are stopping me in the street begging me to come connect their gennys or repair their services. 6am to. 10 pm today. Back out at 6 tom. Reports of electricians price gouging big time. I am not one of them. Nat grid using choppers to locate transmision line in the woods. Bed time.

I wish not to be a bearer of more for you guys but we just finished up 3 days of flooding, high surf, windy as all get out weather. At this time of year, that usually means the big storm that created all that is headed your way in a day or two. Hope it got all spent out when it hit here. Both Dec 12,08 and Dec 10,08 had +14 inches each day in less than 24 hours of rain on Oahu. What a mess.

NOW you tell me... This is my first winter in this house so I'm not really familiar with the quirks yet. Anyways, I had double-checked the crawlspace to make sure I wouldn't get any freezing. Last night I did laundry no problem, went to have a shower this morning... Nada

Turns out that even though this house is now on city water, there's a small pumphouse across the street that used to supply here. My water line comes out of the ground, does a 180? in this doghouse, and back into the ground. Of course, given that the pump equipment is no longer in use, didn't think to put a heater in there. Luckily it was steel pipe. I just stuck a couple of Sterno cans against the pipe and had running water in 30 minutes. Also, there's still electrical service in there, so I dropped in a radiant heater.

Rick,

Another thing you can do to help fight freezing of the water line, is to keep a light going in the well house 24/7 (assume it is already insulated to beat the band). It may not seem like much heat, but an incandescent lamp may save you untold gief...for the mere price of running the light continuous.

Make sure that the light can't do any harm....

You know what's funny? Last night my propane ran out. 200lb tank was at 20% on saturday, ran out in 4 days. Had it filled when I moved in August. Oh, and I also started work at 5AM today because it decided to snow a foot...
