In-use covers

In wet locations outdoors you'll need them. Damp locations outdoors you won't need them.
 
I thought that the 2008 code required in-use covers, however, my favorite carpenter visited one of my jobs after hours and not only removed the covers but told the customer that she could still get the smaller-nicer looking-cheaper flip covers put on her deck because Lowe's and Home depot still sold them. The home owner called me and told me she wanted the FLIP COVERS...

Here is what the 2008 requires. The in use covers was required in the 2005 but neither require them for damp locations such as on a screen porch away from driving rains. The bold is new for 2008

406.8(B) Wet Locations.
(1) 15- and 20-Ampere Receptacles in a Wet Location. 15- and 20-ampere, 125- and 250-volt receptacles installed in a wet location shall have an enclosure that is weatherproof whether or not the attachment plug cap is inserted. All 15- and 20-ampere, 125- and 250-volt nonlocking receptacles shall be listed weather-resistant type.
FPN: The types of receptacles covered by this requirement are identified as 5-15, 5-20, 6-15, and 6-20 in ANSI/NEMA WD 6-2002, National Electrical Manufacturers Association Standard for Dimensions of Attachment Plugs and Receptacles.]
Exception: 15- and 20-ampere, 125- through 250-volt receptacles installed in a wet location and subject to routine high-pressure spray washing shall be permitted to have an enclosure that is weatherproof when the attachment plug is removed.

The requirement goes back at least to '02 edition [406.8(B)] and continues to the '08 edition.

What happens after final inspection is what happens.

So ask your carpenter buddy if he builds walls out of strapping with 3/8" drywall because those products are sold?

That sucks when you get backed into a corner like that.
I hope you told her that she is more then welcome to have the person who told her she could have them install them for her.
 
In eastern WA it depends on how close you are to the overhang of the eaves whether in use covers are required or the older(nicer) weather proof covers are suitable.

Is that based stricly on horizontal measurements, or does a vertical measurement come into play as well?
 
Arlington makes a nice non-metallic in use box and cover called the "InBox". The cover does not stick out like the bubble covers, and is rated for in-use locations. The cost is not much more than a bubble cover and cut-in box, and looks a whole lot better.

Aren't these only for new construction?

They look like they wouldn't stand up to very much abuse. At least with the bubble covers you can get them in metal...

They are actually pretty durable..I installed 3 on my porch recently.

The ones I used where "Red Dot" but I bet others make them.
