Yes there is.

The NEC prohibits using a dimmer to control a receptacle unless listed for the purpose.

There are no dimmers listed for the control of a standard receptacle.

There are some that use a special receptacle and you would have to change the plug on the lamp as well.

I would call that a vague rule and rely on 404.14(E) as the clear rule.:smile:

Lutron makes an approved dimmable receptacle -
http://www.lutron.com/pdfspecs/novatb.pdf
check that pdf out - about half way down the first page will get you the idea of what they do.
They call them a RFDU or -Receptacle For Dimming Use.
It's a two part system- you change out the receptacle and you change out the cord end of the lamp you want to dim.

yeah I think I'll chuck my ariadni dimmers long before I replace all the rec.!!!
