Industrial light fixture NOT directly below outlet

What is the best, most cost-effective way of adding a fluorescent or HID fixture that is NOT "directly below" a twist-lock (or other type) receptacle in an existing industrial area? NEC 410.30(C)(1) prohibits using a flexible cord and plug for this, which is what we'd LIKE to do but apparently can't (because the fixture would not be directly below the receptacle). Plugs are apparently not rated for use with AC or MC Cable. I suppose we could add conduit and wire, place a new twist-lock receptacle directly above where we want the new light fixture to go, and serve it with a cord and plug...but we were hoping to use the existing receptacle and reduce our labor effort.
