inground spa

The house I'm doing work on has a 20 year old inground spa where the pump and heater equipment are about 8' feet away. Not a portable style spa. My question is does the equipment need to be gfci protected? The NEC makes it sound like only portable self contained spas need gfi protection. The spa light is on it's own gfi receptacle.

Cord and plug connected Hot Tub receptacles need GFI protection per 680.42(A)(2).

If that doesn't apply to your situation, 680.22(A)(1) probably does.

Chances are the unit is listed to be GFCI protected as well. (110.3(B).)

Just GFCI protect it.

Why are you involved in a 20-year old spa?

This is not a new installation but i recommended it to be gfi protected. I dont want to be wrong and sound like i'm just trying to get more work out of them. Dont rag on me, but i only have the 1999 nec book to go off right now.
