After receiving a PM from VoltageHZ, I feel it is necessary to publicly apologize for my conduct in closing this thread. I did attack him, and then moments later closed the thread. I feel it's important to explain myself.
I read what had transpired, and I had an opinion. I wrote that opinion.
By the time I had my thoughts down and hit send, I saw Mivey's response that he'd posted immediately before my response. Upon seeing his response, I realized (as I changed hats from a "member with an opinion" to a "moderator with certain responsibilities to order") that this conversation had devolved into a shouting match. So, I closed the thread.
At the moment I closed the thread, I had two options.
1. Leave it open, and ask a second moderator to close it. We have agreed to do that, when a moderator has picked a side in an argument. If it is plain that it would look like a moderator has picked a side, and is closing the thread to win an argument and get the last word, then it's the responsibility of the offending moderator to ask somebody else to close it if they deem it appropriate.
Ideally, moderators do not get involved in heated discussions, which allows all of us to dispassionately close a thread when it's appropriate. As soon as I find such a robot, I will leap to recommending it to Mike as the newest addition to the moderating team.
2. Skip the formalities and just close it before it got really ugly.
I figured my response prior to closing was on the fine line of personal attack, but I figured the greater good of closing it down before we started calling Ken a drug dealer or VoltageHZ a neo-nazi was better than myself looking really classy at the end of the day.
As I always do, I will try to improve, and I apologize for my impropriety.
