This house has an 4 person inside of the house hot tub. It's in a room next to the family room. It has a 50 GFCI breaker fed to it from the panel. The owner doesn't want a disconnect installed in the room of the hot tub. It would make his room look bad if he had a big disconnect on the wall in that room. Do I need a disconnect for the hot tub near it if it's in a room in his house? If so what would be a type of disconnect he could put in the room so he would like it.
I told him that I could put an E-stop button circuit on the wall but he thought that would look bad also.
Thanks!
Jim

Re: Inside Hot Tub

Tell him to try a plant :D not less than 5 ft.and no more than 50 I`d say .

Re: Inside Hot Tub

Emg disconnect is not required in a dwelling, but a maintenance disconnect is. You could use a flush mount 2 space panel with a picture mounted over it? but it has to be within site and readily accessible so there are not two many options.

Re: Inside Hot Tub

Couldn't you use a remotely operated disconnect with something aesthetic as the remote control?

The disconnect is pretty small compared to the huge square thing sitting on the floor.

What CODE cycle is being enforced?
This may help you.

Re: Inside Hot Tub

How about a contactor under the house with a labeled switch on the wall in the hot tub room? This would go along with the remotely operated disconnect previously mentioned.

I am not clear on 680.41, but I think the breakers that are part of the hot tub package(inside hotub) are all that are required in single family dwellings. ??

While you can use remotely operated contactors as an emergency shut down, you cannot not use them for a maintenance disconnect. The disconnect, itself, must open the ungrounded conductors that feed the equipment.

Don, I'm not disagreeing, because I'm not sure I have a leg to stand on here, but 680.12 doesn't seem to me to say that the disconnecting means has to be a single integral unit. And if there can be two seperate components to a disconnecting means, then couldn't the component that causes the disconnection be located to satisfy accessability and the rest be somewhere else?

And on a more practicle note. Isn't there a service bay in that thing?

Re: Inside Hot Tub

Sorry, I guess the service bay thing wont satisfy within sight. Boy is that stupid in this case.
