Hi, I need to do some carport lighting for an older apartment building. The main run is inside underneath the center of the carports for lighting. Almost all the ones I've seen have the inside j-boxes and thought these needed to be the weatherproof j-boxes. The only reason I would do this is the cost difference, Can I use the inside j-boxes and be code compliant??? I'm almost positive I can't but :-?...Thanks JB

The area you mention would certainly be considered a damp location. I believe you'd be OK using ordinary non gasketed boxes and set screw fittings. I've seen countless regular old flourescent strip lights mounted under outdoor canopies in commercial settings. I do however believe that certain specs may mandate going raintight in a situation like that but that would be a design choice.

I agree with M73214 this should be treated as a damp location. Take a look at the definition of a damp location in Article 100.

Not unless it rains upside down in your area.
Thanks for the help on this and believe I've only seen it rain from above but will have to pay more attention next time it rains...Thanks, JB

FWIW, I tried to use WP 3R boxes and couldn't find any rings for mounting the fixture so that and the price difference made the choice for me...
