2008 NEC 404.7 - General purpose switch does not indicate whether they are in the open or closed position.
Interesting. I wonder if there is small imprint of ON and OFF somewhere on the edge of the rocker. This 404.7 is still in the 2017 NEC.

Anyone ever had an inspector fail because of a Decora single pole switch? Maybe they think they are all three way...... ;)

404.7 Indicating.
General-use and motor-circuit switches, circuit breakers, and molded case switches, where mounted in an enclosure as described in 404.3, shall clearly indicate whether they are in the open (off) or closed (on) position.

This does not mention

Switch, General-Use Snap.
A form of general-use switch constructed so that it can be installed in device boxes or on box covers, or otherwise used in conjunction with wiring systems recognized by this Code.

As defined in art 100.

I believe if you are using a general use snap switch as a required disconnecting means it does need to be indicating, need to verify code section on this though.

404.7 does mention general-use switches, as I bolded to make clear.

I know, was just suggesting something that maybe could apply even though it still doesn't quite comply with what code says.

There are many switches out there that are not marked. When it comes to industrial type control switches with interchangeable contact modules you can create a lot of possibilities as well. These maybe don't fully fit general use switch definition either though.

Decora style switches been around a long time and for most part never been marked, and are used a lot - about has to be something that does allow them that isn't so obvious in NEC, if not then a lot of people have been overlooking or even ignoring this for a long time.

General use AC/DC snap switches that also are not marked have been around even longer than the Decora style snap switches.
