I had an inspector tell me that he was not required to wear a harness when using my bucket truck to access a sign for inspection purposes.

It's my understanding that OSHA requires everybody to wear fall protection when in aerial equipment.

Anyone know of any thing that says the inspector is exempt?

OSHA applies to private sector workers. State and local government workers are only covered in states with public employee OSHA laws.

But if he is using our equipment he will follow our safety rules or go and get his own bucket truck.

ride up w/ the inspector, and when you get to the top, push him out. maybe next time he'll wear the harness?

Some insurance policies do not cover for accidents of people in your bucket or on your ladders if they are not employed by you. It usually means some kind of litigation if an injury occurs.

In our area, contractors have taken to locking up their ladders so no one will use them while they are not in use by their own employees.

You mean to tell me that if I used one of the contractors ladders' to inspect the roof or something and I fell off and broke a limb, 'I' could possibly sue them or something? What is this world comming to....Oh no, I have the habit of leaving my cigarettes laying around and when I come back to get them, some of my delicious "smokey treats" seem to be missing....I hope the idiot that is stealing them doesn't sue me for lung cancer down the road.

Exactly!

That's why I don't loan my tools out. To anyone. For any reason.

we do it only because if left out, they'll get stolen. I have found myself in particular to be a favorite target for thieves; I do not know why. I left a job for 10 minutes once and came back to find power tools had been taken. The EC next door was not on the jobsite all day, but left ALL of the copper for the house sitting in open garage facing the street. not an inch went missing. It sat out for 3 days I kid you not.

Cal Osha just came to our office and gave us a seminar. He is not exempt and you can be held liable if you let him do it without one. Roofers are even required to be tied off now and provide one for the inspector and you will be required to supply the harness by most jurisdictions.

cool more OSHA mandates and up to us to know and enforce at no cost to OSHA..to got to love that agency..

And if you do enforce it there won't be any cost to you.

Why would you resent making an inspector (or anyone for that matter) follow the rules you have to?

I do not resent asking the inspector to to be safe on the job site nor do I resent providing him equipment that he does not carry with him..what I resent is that big brother thinking they have to require everything..What ever happened to common sense??ohh thats right lawyers I am sorry I forgot...
