Hey guys just got to rough in a house in a brand new area to our company. The inspector up there requires that if a circuit leaves a room it can only go to 7 points. What is a point any wall box that has electrical wires in it. So picture this you have a garage with 6 plugs and one 3gang switch box. Now you have a weatherproof just outside the garage. You cant use that circuit because you already have 7 points. Now you have to find a new circuit to feed that wp. The other crazy thing is if you have a 3gang box with 3 switches feeding 8 cans 2 track lights and a fluorecent light thats only one point. If you want to you can hit 7 more 3gang boxes you can by code simpily because the only thing that counts is the switch box. My question is do any of you guys have any similar shocking rules that you have to abide by due to ahj?

One of the 'points' must be on top of the inspectors' head.

Sounds like local code to me. Orlando, FL use to have a rule similar to this before local codes were abolished by the state...

what year did that happen brian?

i know a lot of the guys working in the N.FL counties below me have a big problem w/ "local codes", and every time we have an inspector come up here from FL to work, they always try to implement their own "local codes", which GA doesn't allow it either w/o state approval.

Anyhow, they always say "oh well florida allows it"

yeah Its got to be a local code. My only thought is did he only work for one company and was he taught this is the only way to wire a house. You can imagine how fun this house was to wire. Ok Weve got minimum load on this ckt but we cant put anything else on this ckt. Absolute nightmare. Had a weatherproof at the end of the day with all ckts maxed out. 24 ckt panel outside maxed out as well as 24ckt indoor panel maxed out. We ended up having to try to sneak that plug on with a lighting ckt in another room hope he doesnt catch it. Oh yeah no more than 3 points in the kitchen. Ill be counting ckts in my sleep

It's stupid, but if you had that scenario and had to obide by Hitler's rules then I'd feed the 3 gang box from another circuit inside the house as that would be fairly easy. Or usually anyway all outdoor outlets are on the same circuit around here anyway usually fed by a GFCI in the unfinished area in basement.

That is absolute hogwash. Are you sure this is the county's rules or is it just his pet peeve. Cause if it's just his pet peeve then I'd kidnap his pet. :)

no unfortunately its on the books Im on the hunt for whoever wrote this code and thier favorite dog. As far as the wps we used to do it that way and it might be an idea for this area Unfortunately this house was a two story laminated beam cut up house makes it difficult to get from front of house to backside. The reason why we dont hit wps on one ckt is boss feels its cheaper to install min 3 gfcis and hit wps off closest ckt. As opposed to pulling 12-2 from one wp to next and so on. Im not as convinced but he may have a point and he signs my paycheck.

well if he's trying to save money then he should have you guys using 14-2 instead of 12-2 for the weatherproofs. :)

we have no choice the county code if not state code requires 12-2 the only place we could run 14-2 is from a switch to light not the hot only the switchleg which in my opinion is a violation of the nec since we only use 20a breakers in these homes.I guess we could use 15a breakers and do this but why theres no sense in 12w hots and 14w switchlegs. can anybody confirm if the 12w requirements for the state of alaBAMA can of worms I just opened I know

Florida abolished all local codes in March 2002. We have been asking for uniform and consistant codes for decades and finally somebody heard. Any additional ordinances to the NEC have to be researched thoroughly, submitted to the state board for approval, and enacted statewide! Of course you're still going to have the good ol' boys to deal with and you always run the risk of making an enemy if you disagree with them too much.

I thought the nec was a permissive document. All I ever hear is cant do this cant dothat.??? Good question though. Maybe some sort of tap rule.

I would love to have that idiot on one of my jobs just once. Wow would he look stupid when I finished explaining to him and his bosses, the elected officials of the community, how this jerk was enforcing his own interpretation without benefit of my due process. I love picking those fights with these self-inflated jerks. Just stick to the code no personal BS.
