Pierre, you may not derive pleasure from this, but I do when these illegal activities are caught by inspectors.

She deserves what she gets.

I have taken a bunch of calls from homeowners that are really trying my patience lately though - talk about "lying through your teeth".
2 in particular stand out.

Ok, that was 1 (one) story....where's the other....or are you saying this HO was lying through her 2 (two) remaining teeth?

Before I was accepted into the Navy Nuclear Power Program, I had to endure an interview with Admiral Rickover. Stories of his interviews are legendary. Let me share one tidbit. As soon as he started yelling at me (he yelled at almost every one of his interviewees), it occurred to me that his tone of voice did not carry any meaning. He was not mad at me, it was just one of his ways of testing me. So I decided to completely disregard the yelling, and listened for the words that were being yelled. When I heard a question, I answered it. Otherwise, I just sat listening. It worked for me.

You have a different situation, in that your homeowner really is mad. But you are welcome to steal - - - -no I mean borrow - - - my technique. Disregard the volume and tone and any insulting words she might throw your way. Listen for any facts that she reveals or for any questions she may ask, and respond in a quiet and professional tone.

Charlie your the man, you got to meet Rickover.

A man that changed the history of the world.

On the subject of being yelled at.

I won't be yelled at unless I am deserving of such treatment. (One of the reasons I could not see myself joining the service)

In Pierre's case I would simply tell her not to yell if she wants progress.

If she continued to yell she can do so while watching me drive away.

OMG!
Have you ever gotten a speeding or parking ticket?

Not for more than 10 years I would bet on the speeding.

But yes I have gotten them and I pay them without complaining about the cops or the laws.

That does not mean I am happy to part with my money only that if I get caught breaking the law I am prepared to pay the price.

I have this strange thing called personal responsibility.

Bob, I've got that too.

It seems there are fewer and fewer that have it now days though, so it does seem to be strange. It is always some one else's fault, or the "I'm an exception" mentality.

A perfect description of the person Pierre is dealing with.

They tried to pull a fast one, they took a gamble, they lost now they have pay up.

Not going to feel bad for them.

OT but here in MA the courts recently ordered a new 1.25 million house to be torn down.

There is a lot to it but IMO the homes owner/builder ignored zoning rules.

They had been warned before building that it was 'at their peril'

Story Here

Reading that story just confirms my thoughts about how complicated laws can be. Lawyers do not make it any easier. Their language is as foreign to me as our language must be to some people.

I would further this by saying that it is important for those who are suppose to uphold the rules that they try to enforce them fairly... which sometimes means being yelled at as emotions get high... as Charlie alluded to, when being yelled at try to just listen to the words and let the noise roll off your shoulders. I think that I have gotten very good at it. They may be yelling at me, but in essense they are yelling at the situation.

I have had some very similar days Pierre. Last week, I went to pool inspection and noticed a new spa on the new pool deck. I questioned the homeowner on its installation considering it was not listed on the permit application. He stated he worked out a deal with one of the electricians working on the pool equipment to wire the spa over a weekend. As you can imagine this becomes a difficult issue to work out.

We have many occasions where homeowners begin to occupy a structure before all finals and the C of O is awarded. This creates a real fiasco. Homeowners? trying to complete their own work is a real mess MOST of the time. Developers building shell occupancies seem to prefer completing work before its inspected and then playing dumb later. And then when they don't build to the approved plans they don't seem to understand why they need to submit a revision. It goes on and on.

And of course there are those daily calls of just about every question that has ever been posted on this Forum! If there is ever a day that I actually just go out and complete my inspections with no controversy whats so ever, I would have to figure there is something really, really wrong.
Bryan correct me if I am wrong, but in this state a residence can`t be occupied before a CO is issued hense certificate of occupancy. There must be completed Frame,Electrical,Mechanical and then a final building inspection that ensures that all other trades have complied with thier applicable inspections. After the EC`s final inspection is done thier resonsibility for any work is over. But if there is no CO and the electrical inspection (final that is ) then it is the inspectors job to issue a stop work order until proper permits are pulled for the additional work being done.

we should get together make a list of "excuses by the numbers". That would save us a lot of time.

1. I've been doing this for ___ years and this is the first time I've ever been called on that.

2. They don't make us do it like that in ___________.

3. I've never heard of such a thing.

4. You guys are the only ones calling that.

Others?

Of course, turnabout's fair play. I had an inspector use both of those on me last winter when I corrected him on a grounding/bonding issue. :)
