Inspector's Rant

By not charging reinspect your charging higher permit fees to all. That is not fair to the EC that usually passes because his work is right. A reasonable fee of $25 to $40 should be charged. Maybe bend a little for the guys that try to be right and seldom fail.

A rate is a rate. Bending puts you at a risk for litigation for discrimination. I suppose you could write the local ordinance in such a manner to allow some leeway, but I doubt the authority's attorney would approve of it.

My issue with charging for a reinspect is that you need to be 100% correct, if I need to call to explain or cite the code that allows me to do what you perceive as a violation, then I should be entitled to a fee for my time involved.

If you were on site when the inspector got there you could discuss it then and not have to come back. And you do have a fee, it's called the "cost of doing business".

When I finally charge a reinspection fee, I have usually just become fed up with a contractor. I have a story that just happened, but the jest of it is I actually stood there with the boss after the second inspection and told him and pointed at everything that needed to be corrected. When I got there the third time and it still wasn't write, now you're just wasting my time.
