Is it permitted to use "residential grade" receptacles on a commercial job? They are labeled "residential" and installing them in a comercial building could be construed as a violation? Never been called on it, just curious.

I believe there's a difference between a manufacturer's product line and a code-enforceable specification. However, commercial specifications often state the grade of device required to be used, and that is a must.

Only if the manufacturers installation instructions specifically state the condition using language similar to: "for use only in ..." or "not suitable for...".

Thanks for the replies. I really posted this just to see what you all would say. I typically use residential grade in residential work, and commercial or spec grade in commercial work, just wondered if an inspector was really having a bad day, he could enforce this.

While we are on the subject of labelling, i have often said that pretwisting of wires before screwing on a wire-nut is a Code violation, based on 110.3(B). This is because, on the side of the box (the ones that i had read up to that point), it stated to simply lay the wires next to each other and then screw on the wire-nut.

Yesterday, i read the side of a box of wire-nuts that stated "pre-twisting of wires acceptable but not neccesary." I guess it's no longer a Code violation to pre-twist wires. (It probably never was anyway, it's just clearer now).
