I was doing a infrared survey and noticed a warm doorbell
upon closer inspection the electrician had installed the doorbell transformer inside a blue carlon box then mounted the doorbell over it.

Is this a legitimate installation??

I will say Yes. I have done such installs on a slab foundation. With a Ranch or Two Story the preferred location is in the basement on a Smoke Detector or pull chain. This is just personal preference.

Only thing that comes to mind is that mfg directions/installation may require some working space/clearances.

So you have high voltage and low voltage in the same box? How is the transformer mounted? I doubt this is compliant.

Sounds pretty hack to me.
I doubt the transformer is listed to be installed in this manner.

All the ones I've seen like this the transformer just sitting in there loose, no divider between voltages, and electrician saying "of course its all right, thats the way we've always done it":happysad::slaphead::blink:

Correct you both are. Yes That's the way it's always been done. Compliant or not it has never been an issue with AHJ.
