Installing flush mounted LED "faux recessed" lighting fixtures on a 7 cu/in pancake box.

Any reason a normal bar hanger box wont work for you in this situation it might be cheaper even counting the labor of adding the particle board in then pancake box. If trying to keep the pancake box they make the nonmetalic boxes with the side recessed for more cubic inches. In these situations we've been installing the 1/2 inch flat LED recessed lights but they dont offer a box to change to a normal fixture if that's a concern.

some the earlier versions of these type luminaires you couldn't use a shallow box period, the driver section of the luminaire took up space in the box and even if you eliminated the conductors a 1/2 inch deep box still not physically deep enough to accommodate this luminaire.

Seems to not be so much of an issue anymore but at same time the luminaire doesn't really have any space for conductors so you still need to account for what space is in the box with no additional space that can be part of the luminaire in other instances.

Seems like the OP wants something that he can screw to some plywood sheathing that is later finished over with 1/2 something, for example, drywall. It seems like one of those L fan boxes that are meant to screw to a joist might be a good compromise. He does need to go ahead and cut out a piece of sheathing to slide the L portion up and then can affix the box to the sheathing itself.

Or use a cut-in box, then shim under the lip about 3/8 - 1/2 inch.

In this situation, I would cut out the particle board for an 1 1/2 deep 4/0 box. Look at an architectural cut of the finished ceiling to get my dimension or talk with the installer to get it. Then go up in the attic with a piece of 2 x 4 and secure it between the trusses at the level needed to have my 4/0 box flush with the finished product. Then my connections to the fixture wires would be able to be in the 4/0 box still allowing the fixture to be flush with the ceiling.
