We have a developer who is trying to get the "pretend load" of the 8kW range dropped from 220.84.

Now it's clear to me how the code calcs work here. My boss, however, is trying to give them an answer beyond "just because the Code says so.

My question is: "Does anyone know the intent behind the pretend 8kW load?" I'm guessing that the CMP feels that this is a minimum acceptable service size and dropping the 8kW would result in a service that is too small.

The 8kW per unit does not really exist in 220.84 calculations under Part IV Multifamily. The full range load is listed in the Part IV f-i-p nameplate totals prior to using table 220.84 deratings (with the exception for using part III calcs 8kW derate from table 220.55 Column C) should the load be 'lesser".

Part IV [220.84] requires that both range and HVAC full rating be used for application in Multi-family dwellings Demand Factoring. The intent is to avoid double dipping to lower the overall Service requirements in multi-dwelling projects. Whew, "I hope this description makes sense to what it means".... rbj

Note: Both range and HVAC must be electrical loads to use Multi-family Optional Calculations of 220.84.
