When the circuit is intentionally shorted, you also get a test of all the connections between the short circuit and the service entrance. I understand an electrician my buddy knows who used the switch across the hot/neutral once shorted an outlet and opened a connection. It took them about a day to find where it failed and repair it.
One day when we were moving to a different van I was cleaning out the old one, I found his switch, cord and plug assembly. I cut it into 6 pieces and put them into 2 different dumpsters.
