We sell and rent diesel driven pumps with control panels. These panels operate off of floats that go into the water. We have two different kinds of panels - one operates of 12 Volt the other off 24 Volt. What is required in order to make our floats intrinsically safe?

Re: Intrinsic Safety Requirements

Why do you want them to be intrinsically safe? That is normally used in Classified areas to prevent explosions.

Re: Intrinsic Safety Requirements

One of our customers is placing these floats in a hazzardous area (according to them) and is requiring we supply them a control panel with floats that is intrinsically safe when used in this application.

Re: Intrinsic Safety Requirements

You install a IS relay. See NEC article 504. Your control panels may need to be UL listed as IS.

Re: Intrinsic Safety Requirements

Is the pump suitable for pumping flammable liquids? Is the pump itself in the classified area? Is the pump suitable for installation in a classified area?
